Sunraysia – What a blast!
SUNRAYSIA will further cement its reputation as a motor sport capital when it hosts the first ever UIM World Unlimited Displacement Powerboat Championships next year. The event will be held at Gol Gol from October 15-17, 2010, with competitors from America and New Zealand set to compete against Australia’s top boats for the first time in the unlimited class.
Fastwater Promotions is the company organising the titles, and directors Angela Sawka and Tony Walsh were in Sunraysia this week to meet with council and other involved parties. Walsh said the event would be like nothing ever before in Sunraysia.
“It’s going to be a huge event. It’s the first time a world championships has ever been held in this class,” Walsh said. “This is the first time ever that we’ve seen these three nations compete against each other in this event and we think that’s going to draw a crowd. “Over the three days we’d envisage up to 10,000 people coming to watch.”
It’s a coup for the district to be chosen for such a massive event, but Sawka said the reasons for choosing Gol Gol were simple. “For starters it’s quite central for the Australian competitors to get to, whether they’re coming from WA or SA or Queenland,” Sawka said.
